I love these articles. They deliver simple ideas that to most people easier said than done. Myself 8kcluded for some teachings. It's like finding that aha moment
Been a Taoist since first reading Archie Bahm's translation as a teenager many moons ago. A short spiritual philosophy book that truly affected my life trajectory in a good way and still does. You do a great job teaching its simple, yet profound tenets. Bravo for spreading this ancient Eastern wisdom!
Having read a number of your essays I've noticed a commonly repeating taoist analogy is for people to become 'like water.' The idea holds the fact that water is a soft substance which can cut through rock given enough time and patience. However, in my experience human life has more dissimilarities than similarities with water. For example, water has one single, straight forward rule to follow: Go downhill. Human life, on the other hand, requires us to make often complex choices, and spend energy to go over obstacles which water does not. Getting an education, job training, university degrees, and countless other tasks going "up". Humans have consciousness and make ethical choices and sometimes even self-sacrificial decisions in keeping with morality.
This is just to say that the water metaphor is poetic, but I think has very limited value as an idea I want to teach my children.
I love these articles too. 💖 A few years ago I read Dr Wayne Dyer's book Living the Wisdom of the Tao and it became an inspiration. Your articles are beautiful reminders to me. Thank you!
After the endless blizzard of bad news and upsetting actions across the world reading this was like witnessing the blossom just touching my cherry tree here in New Zealand after a long cold winter. Your insightful writing refreshed my soul and brought a tear to my eye thank you.
The empty vessel is easier to carry, than the vessel that is filled. Be still my heart, contented.
