The image of comparison as a funhouse mirror really struck me, not just because it distorts reality, but because it tricks us into believing the distortion is real. That resonates with my own reflections on how much of life is shaped by constructs we mistakenly perceive as absolutes. Approval, success, and even morality often carry the weight of inevitability when in fact they’re mirrors bent by culture, context, and perspective.
I also appreciate the reminder that authenticity can be contagious. When one person stops performing for approval, it can create space for others to breathe as well. That makes me wonder, though: do you see freedom from comparison as something we can fully achieve, or is it more about learning to live with its tension in a healthier way?
I wrote something similar into my journal: It’s really beautiful to discover that just because you’re seeking approval you know you are worthy of love. That realization helped me heal generational patterns and redirect my energy 🙏🏼
This post comes in a day when I have low energy and perhaps low self esteem. The Ventura county Fair just ended, full of fun house mirrors. Your post is a good reminder for me to discard what is wee in other people's mirrors. Thank you. Namaste
I always tell my recovering addict patients that WHATEVER ANYONE THINKS OF JIM IS NONE OF JIM’S BUSINESS. It’s a little tough to practice but the peace of it is divine.
